I just installed FCPX 10.2.3 on my 5k iMac. I formatted two usb external drives to OSX but Final Cut doesn't see them. One of the drives is empty!

WWhat do mean doesn't see it? When you're importing, creating a library, exporting?
Did you come from a version 10.0.* of FCP X?
Since 10.1, the drives do not appear as they did before.

Thanks for replying. I confess I'm new to Final Cut Pro. I've done a few small projects in iMovie and one in Sony Vegas. Looking at tutorials for FCPX, which were likely for previous versions, I notice the recommendation to save Events and Projects in an external drive. I have two external drives formatted for my Mac so that I can read and write with them but I don't see anything acknowledging the drives in the left pane where I expected to see it. When I open import, I don't see an option to save my data to one of those drives either. I have no yet tried to un mount and re mount them. I will try that next. BTW one of the drives is completely empty now so it seems not likely that anything on the drive is fooling FCPX.
This is my first experience with FCPX other than looking at tutorials which are likely out of date. So how would I know if FCPX is acknowledging my external drives? As I said in my post above, I will try ejecting and re mounting to see if that has any effect. I'll re post with the result.
Command-i opens the import dialog. You should see your storage devices in the list on the left.

TThose are obsolete tutorials. They pre-date v10.1 from 2013. When you make a new library you assign a location for it, on any OS X formatted drive. In library properties you assign where the media is saved, either inside the library bundle itself or an external folder which can be anywhere you want.
Thank you so much Tom! Yes! There they are! This latest version is VERY different than the obviously obsolete versions depicted in the videos I've been seeing on you tube. Your explanation was very clear and I really appreciate it! Thanks to both of you for responding!
Yes Russ! There they are! I was always abel to find those drives as a source to import from. My issue was that I didn't (until now) understand how to save those files to an external drive. Now I understand I must think in terms of Libraries. Thanks to you and Tom for your help!
